Accessibility
Last updated: work in progress. This text is not final yet.
Our goal
We want Abece to be usable by everyone, whatever device, input method or assistive technology you use. This page says what we aim for, what we have checked so far, and what we have not checked yet. We aim for WCAG 2.2 level AA on abece.app. We have not had an independent conformance evaluation, so we do not claim conformance.
The website
We check every page of abece.app in English, Turkish and German, in light and dark appearance, on a phone and a desktop screen:
- Automated checks. Every page is tested with axe against WCAG 2.2 level A and AA. These checks find only part of the possible problems.
- Keyboard. Every link, button and menu can be reached and used with the keyboard in a sensible order. A skip link is the first stop on every page. The focus is always visible. The language menu in the header opens and closes with the keyboard, Escape closes it, and focus returns to its button.
- Zoom and small screens. Pages work at 200 percent zoom and at a width of 320 pixels without horizontal scrolling. Wide tables scroll inside their own frame, which you can reach with the keyboard.
- Text size and contrast. Text sizes use relative units, so they follow your browser settings. Colours are checked for contrast in both appearances.
- Motion. The ring on the home page plays a short animation once. If your device is set to reduce motion, it shows the final picture at once and nothing moves.
- Structure. Every page has one main heading and landmarks. The language of each page is set. Decorative drawings are hidden from screen readers, and the home page ring is described in text.
- No scripts needed. The pages and the navigation do not depend on scripts of our own.
The app
Work in progress: What we can say about the accessibility of the iOS app will be added here once it has been checked on a device.
Known limitations
- We have not yet tested the website or the app by hand with a screen reader such as VoiceOver. Automated checks cannot replace this.
- Work in progress: further known problems in the app will be listed here.
- The imprint is available in German only, as German law requires.
Feedback
If you meet a barrier on abece.app or in the app, or have a suggestion, write to support@abece.app. Please say which page or screen and which device or assistive technology you use. (Work in progress: how quickly we aim to answer will be added here.)
